Managing the Human Impact of Change: Insights from the InfraBuild Transformation Journey

At Choice, we’ve had the opportunity to work with leading Australian industrial organisations navigating major structural change. OneSteel – now operating as InfraBuild – is one such company, with a long history of transformation, workforce restructuring, and shifting ownership models. This is the story of how InfraBuild is managing the closure of one of their Australian sites.

Planning for People

One of the early lessons was the importance of anticipating the emotional and psychological impact of redundancy.

In each transition phase, the company:

  • Prioritised tailored on-site support through career coaches
  • Delivered group briefings and one-on-one sessions to help employees understand their options
  • Developed internal mobility plans for those who could remain with the business

Putting Plans into Action

InfraBuild executed their plans compassionately. The HR teams were central to the success of this process. Their deep knowledge of the workforce and genuine commitment to people made a significant difference.

Our coaches customise support to ensure the employee receives the support they need and when they need it.

Lessons Learned

From the perspective of those leading the change and those impacted by it, several key insights emerged:

  • Communication is everything– Early, honest, and frequent updates built trust, even when certainty was lacking.
  • Good outplacement pays off – Employees who feel supported are more likely to leave as advocates, not critics.
  • Leadership visibility matters – Managers who showed up, listened, and stood by employees made the greatest impact.
  • Long-term thinking is essential – Career transition doesn’t end on the employee’s last day. Real transformation happens in the months that follow.
